Which bell housing bolts go where?
I have an early M38 with replacement late block and
bell housing. Looking at the Ord 9 G740 I see three sizes
of bolts. Bubba has played pickup sticks with the bolts in
my bell housing.
Which size bolts go where?
Thanks,
Brian

Do you have the two reinforcement angles that use the lower 4 bolts?

Seriously? With so much gravy under there one would never know they were missing.
I'm thinking Bretto could cobble up a couple from angle iron on a slow afternoon.
I'm just lucky Wes asked. I started looking at a few other details. The top left bolt was loose when I was rubbing it with a wire brush. Seems Bubba forgot to put a lock and nut on the back somewhere in time when he was buttoning up this phase of his project. I'm afraid to find out what else I don't know..............

I'm getting ready to flange everything back up and looking at the various and sundry bolts of various threads and lengths have decided to buy new bell housing bolts and nuts.
Looking at the Ord 9 G740 and 758, they both show
2 - 3/8 x 3-3/8" NF dowel bolts,
4 - 3/8 x 2-1/2" NF bolts,
2 - 3/8 x 3" NF bolts.
I can't seem to reconcile the bolt lengths and locations to the second or later bell housing photo above.
Should I get the longer bolts listed in both Ord 9's?
And Grade 5 or Grade 8?
Thanks!

Actually not so! Read very closely. An indented parts list only applies to the non-indented part number directly above it.Looking at the Ord 9 G740 and 758, they both show
2 - 3/8 x 3-3/8" NF dowel bolts,
4 - 3/8 x 2-1/2" NF bolts,

The 2nd vehicle only used one bell housing, the later M38 one.
804812 and 804306 are the same (late M38 & all m38A1/M170) bell housing. 306 is the basic casting and 812 is the assembly with stud.
801628 and 801629 are the same (Early M38) bell housing. 628 is the basic casting and 629 is the assembly with starter bearing.
