Getting ready to reassemble my axle. The manual doesn't call for a gasket between the brake backing plates and the axle flanges, and there wasn't one when I took it apart.
My question might fall into what Wes calls "what the manuals don't tell you but every good mechanic already knows". I'm challenged in that department
Should I mate them dry, or would it be good to use some Permatex in between them? Seems to me like some sort of seal might be a good thing, at least for corrosion control? I saw no evidence of a sealer when I took it apart.
Your advice always appreciated!

A gasket is used with live axles having oil in them. The trailer does not use a gasket or sealant. Corrosion is prevented by proper painting. Gaskets and/or sealants add compressability to the joint which offers the opportunity for the bolts to loosen as the gasket shrinks.
