Lug Nut Stud length...

Post by Jeff_Lee »

I have successfully replaced the first of 5 lug nut studs on my Dana 44 rear hub.

The new right hand thread stud is .050 of an inch shorter in length than the one I am replacing, so not much there. It pressed in smoothly and straight. I took my handy work and put the hub on an M38 wheel to check concentricity and length.

As expected, the stud was just slightly shorter than the existing studs. The threads are just slightly exposed after the lug nut is snugged up.
My question, is this: how did original wheel studs looked after tightening? This stud is about flush with the top of the lug nut. My old aircraft maintenance experience was 2 threads showing on all bolts and studs... Should I be happy with the length or go slightly longer?

Thanks, Jeff

I found the same issue with new studs. I have been looking for a slightly smaller nut.

Keep in mind it is the different angles the lug nut and the wheel's hole meet each other with that captures the nut. I doubt we will drive them fast enough to force a nut loose.
