Highest known RMC engine number

Hi. What is the highest known RMC engine number and when did RMC production end? Mine is RMC106676. I know it’s almost impossible to know its year of manufacture but I’d like to get an idea of whereabouts in the overall production period it fell and knowing that MC stopped around 90xxx and knowing what year MC production stopped I should be able to get close.

That won't work.

The engines with the same casting number were not serialed at the foundry. They received a serial when they were installed in a chassis or ordered as an RMC by the army. There is no real orderly progression of RMCXXXXX numbers. The closest you can ever get for the 804380 is sometime between Jun 1952 until the casting ended production about 1955 - 57. The RMC numbers on the 641087 castings were from 1950 thru the end of 1952.

Just search thru the M38 data base list for the many RMC #'s and sort out the highest one.

The highest RMC engine number I have in the database is

RMC 166173 the one just above it is RMC 129000.

I can also tell you that when sorting the MC and RMC engine together the RMC engines sort together in batches indicating the RMC engines were built and designated as RMC engines as MC engines were being built.

Just for clarity, did they start serial numbering with the leading "1"....meaning for example that RMC 166173 was the 66,173 serial number used and not the 166,173 serial number used?

Since I can't post a clipping of the database to show how the MC and RMC engines fall in line with each other let me layout an example.

MC engines started with serial number MC 10001 and progress to, lets say for this example, MC 10500. Willys would then continue with the serial number sequence and RMC 10501 to 10600 would become R-eplacement MC engines.
MC 10601 would be the start back of engines install in M38s on the assembly line until another order of RMC engines were needed.

You can also see the progression in the M38 database when engines serial numbers jump up steeply. I will never get enough original M38 data to define starting and ending batches of RMC engines, but I do have enough to show what was going on during M38 production.

For all who have M38A1s, you can see the same thing happening with them.

Well I didn't look it up because I thought you would follow my advice to go look at the data base yourself to draw your own conclusions. Looks like Harold had his copy right in front of him already.

Hi Wes. I did just what you said, I have no idea why my original question was reposted because I didn’t do it deliberately. Maybe I fat fingered something but I sure didn’t type it in again.
