M-38A1 Tub Mounting Question...

Post by OKCM38CDN »

I have the tub setting on the frame after painting, I am now going thru and placing the bolts in the mounting points.

There are 7 different tub mounting positions on the frame. Front toe boards (1), tub floor in front of seats (2), Inside the tool box (3) (Right side only), under the tub at the point where the rear floor attaches to the riser (4), two brackets mounted in a line with frame cross member then on the same cross member (5), Next to rear cross member over the rear axle two on the little tabs next to the frame then two more on that cross member (6), Rear cross member there are two in the light bracket and two on little hat channels attached either side of the pintle (7)...

I have one question. There are 4 mounting points for Position 6, two of which are the Elevator / Carriage bolts. Those were easy. but the other two and the points for position 5 (4 of them) do not have holes in the floor and need to be drilled out.
My question is how important are these other points. Should I worry about them or not...

Each row of mounts is important. Willys had to be sure the tub was attached securely so there would be no issues with any loading configuration or type of driving.

So if you wish to second guess the engineers then it depends on what loadings you will load and what type driving you will do.

I would not burn up the clock on two overlooked undrilled tub holes and would just drillem amd boltem.

Thanks Wes, that is the drawing I am going off in addition to the SNL listing of mounting hardware...

Just that the two outer points on 6 are elevator / carriage bolts and all the rest are standard bolts and washers...

The only hard one to get to is right side number 5 as that bracket sits over the frame an will have to be drilled from above after careful measurement...

Will do today, need to pull the jeep out of the garage to get to the right side; not enough room in the garage to easily get to that side.

Added note, Position 6 the inner locations only get rubber shims as in the SNL it only lists 2 sets of hardware, but 4 rubber cushions... When all else fails read the book carefully...

But the #5 brackets were only drilled through the floor panel , when a gun mount should be installed.

Otherwise there are no holes or bolts at the #5 positions.

#6 only the outer one's, attached to the frame, were used for bolting the tub to the frame.

Or I'am wrong?

Sincerely yours

Frank, I am sure you are correct. I have climbed under the jeep and the outer positions for mount 5 would line up for the braces for a gun mount. There are 4 other holes that are possible for the mount.

I went under and drilled all of Position 5 holes that it called for, I only drilled 2 holes for the gun mount (I need to relook the SNL over). and I drilled 2 of the 4 holes for the bracing...

I think the SNL calls for those positions to be drilled as you say if a gunj mount was going to be mounted, and Willys made provisions for them.
Will see how it goes...

Thanks All for the input...
