ISO split rivets for grill welting

Post by Kendall »

So a while back I ordered the grill welting and rivets and then put it aside. Now it is time to install it so I started in the middle and was working my way outwards when I soon found out the outer rivets needed to be longer than the middle ones, yet all of the ones in the package I bought are the same length. Does anyone know where these can be purchased locally (hardware/ big box stores) or does anyone have about 8 that I can buy?
The ones I have are 3/8" long and it appears that I need 1/2" long ones.
Thanks,
Kendall

Hi Kendall,
I'm pretty sure I've seen them in the Hillman bins at my local Ace Hardware Store. I can go look and check my memory. You're looking for 1/2-inch length......what diameter?

Thanks Ron. I just checked one of our local hardware stores and no split rivets. These are 1/8" diameter.

Kendall,
Just poking my memory while the store is closed....this is what I expect to find (cost less than a nickel each):

https://shop.hillmangroup.com/ccrz__Pro ... clcl=en_US

https://www.amazon.com/Hillman-Group-12 ... 3C3U&psc=1

Sure 1/2 is long enough? They appear to have 5/8 also. I recall seeing brass or copper in the bin as well as steel.....maybe old stock.

The ORD9 page 324 calls for quantity 13 of Rivet, Split, Steel, Oval head, Black enameled, 9/64 x 7/16

Kendall did not tell us which model jeep he is working on so I checked both IPL's and the M38A1 & M38 both use a split rivet pn 113454 listed on both manuals as 9/64 x 7/16 and the quantity listed is 13.

Here is what I found on line:

This is for one of my M38s (but it does not seem to make a difference for this part between the two models). I'm thinking 7/16 would be a bit shy to go through the material and two layers of steel, but that is what the manual says. But Ron I am still thinking 1/8"X1/2" would be fine. Thanks for checking.

Hi Kendall,
Yes, my local Ace Hardware has Hillman 1/8x1/2 steel split rivets, but pretty pricey at .40 cents each, plus 7% sales tax. Cost for 8 would be $3.45 plus postage, guessing another $4 for that.

As mentioned above, you could buy a lifetime supply for not much more than that ---- and then we could ask you to buy some!

Let me know if you want me to put some in the mail. Glad to help.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for your effort. This is what I learned from this exercise- not all hardware stores are the same. After going to my local Ace Hardware and not finding split rivets I posted the plea. Ron said his local hardware store had them, so today I called another (Ace) hardware store in town. No luck. I then looked online and found several Ace Hardware stores in town and one True Value Hardware store. So I called them, and sure enough they had want I needed. So went there after work and bought what I needed. So next time I need some hardware and Ace doesn't have it, always try True Value.

Glad you found them!

I'm fortunate to have an Ace about 1/2 mile away, a newer store, maybe 10 years old. Their Hillman bins are pretty good, but for really hard-to-find obscure stuff I go to the 50 year old Ace in the next town over. Old school hardware store. Cracks me up that I can stump most of their young employees when looking for really hard-to-find stuff.

Does not take much to stump alot of them these days. Simple things like marret, grommet, and zip tie have drawn blank looks at some of the places I have been. I mean the automotive area employees at the one store did not know what a battery terminal brush was....
