Electrical Wire Information Needed

Post by Trip »

In both Ord. 9 manuals (G-740),( Electrical 06) figure 6-12 (1951) and 6-15 (1955) the drawing (upper right corner) refers to the cable (headlight wires) which I assume run from the passenger side across the top of the grill.

My question is:
This cable in both Ord.9 manuals is listed as part number: AL CB 18499 for the left and AL CB 18500 for the right.
Is there a way to determine the exact length for these cables as listed in the Ord. 9 handbooks?

Also, is there anywhere to be found the specifications (length,etc.) for all the wires/cables on an M-38?

There are two places you might find the dimensions. From the guy that originally owned the harness building business in the Florida/Georgia area and the guy in New England that owns the current harness building business. I would guess both would consider it a trade secret. If you peruse the ORD 9's carefully some of the individual wire lengths are given after the assemblies are broken down but only a few. The wire PN itself is usually identified below assemblies. You will see an entry for a certain harness assembly and indented a few spaces below it will say "Includes the following items:" When individual wires and gauge are listed they occasionally also list length. But the best way is to simply acquire an old complete original harness, lay it out on a layout board and measure all lengths. There has to be at least a few members among us that actually took notes when fabricating their own new harnesses that could offer up some history here!

Thanks Wes,

I just thought there might be someplace where one could find the specs. as Willys designed.

headlamp harness I took apart had;
right side, #'s 17,18,20 are 48 1/2"
left side 17,18,20 are 23"
ground wires 91 are 14"

blackout light harness #19 is 18 1/2" and #91 is 23"

I used these on half a dozen harness and seem to fit well

I had this in my photo album from when I built my harness with measurements of the original brittle one.
