I have a '53 M38A1 and have trouble starting and have worked it down to the carburetor. Rebuilding the jeep is a retirement adventure for me with little previous mechanical experience.. I am having fun learning. I am told I have a Solex Carb with an ID number of P-316, (best I can tell).

I can not find a rebuild kit for it on line.
Is there an alternative carb I can buy and install?

if you want stock look for a carter YS950.

Don’t know about the Solex but there is a definite procedure to starting old vehicles equipped with a manual choke.

Hello Avenger3, Note I have moved your post from our project following board to our technical questions board.

Solex carbs were cheap substitutes for the original stock Carter YS950S which are getting scarce & expensive in any condition. They usually perform ok but they do not have the off road (odd off kilter angles) performance of the Carter YS950S. When they were substituted there were additional alterations needed to accommodate them such as linkage arrangement and air intake plumbing.

The most common Solex used on the Willys F134 is the M34PBIC.

Take note it does not use a choke plate for starting. It uses starting enrichment circuit that only adds more fuel and does not restrict air flow.

Hi Avenger3. I have the Solex M34PBIC carburetor in my 1961 M38A1. I had some time of struggle to start her when she was new to me a couple of years ago. After a while I learned for first cold start to use full choke, NO throttle at all, and then crank until she starts.

The former owner had installed an electric fuel pump in line with ordinary mechanical fuel pump, just to boost up fuel before start in order to save "cranking time" (to save lifetime for battery and starter) as it seems this carburetor let the fuel go back to the tank when she sits for more than a day or so. After she starts I turn off the electric pump and let the mechanical pump do the pumping.

When she starts give her some throttle and squeze in the choke to half level. When she is getting some temperature in the engine you can push in the choke completely.
