I had the same issue (s) with the greaseable pivots. I found (at my local farm store no less) shorter castle nuts allowing cotter key alignment.

Good idea.
Our TSC is catering to the locals as a retail store/mower repairs. I will go up to the ACE hardware in Yorktown to check out their selection. They have everything.

I second the motion for ACE hardware, virtually every nut, bolt, spring, pin, you name it, that I've needed for my Jeep came from my family owned local ACE. Was just there today as a matter of fact.

So almost a year ago I bought a jeep cover from KW and it finally showed up... That was two deployments ago.

Kind of useless now that I will move the jeep into my garage when I come back from dropping my ship off at a shipyard for a 8 month refurb project.

I am looking forward to the idea I only have to work 3 days a week till August.

Oh and I am looking to buy a used/good M38 air cleaner if anyone has one for sale.
I dropped a request in the wanted section.

As far as the deployment went= we had a total of 521 migrants come across our deck in just a two week time frame. All sailing in vessels way overloaded, no food, no water, nothing! Pick them up, drop them back to the partner agencies in the countries waters we picked them up in... Those countries try them in court and then send them back to the country they came from. I haven't seen anything like this (#'s) since the early 2000s. we even picked up "search and rescue survivors" who their stories were absolute garbage and they were human trafficker's, but we cant prove it and have to treat them the same as we would a Joe boater going out and losing his Chris Craft in a gale. Makes my skin crawl. I'll write that in a separate off topic later.

I'll keep my eyeballs peeled for a M38 air cleaner. I had to buy one too. It's one of those crazy expensive parts unique to the M38.

I have to ask about the unusual square shape of the oil pan with no skid plate? Where's the drain plug, on the bottom?
It looks like it must hold a lot more than 4 quarts!

And the single hook on the engine lift plate?

I'm guessing they were there when you bought it.

1 - Why the odd looking lift ring bracket with only one lift ring?


2 - Why the civilian distributor?

1 suggestion:

Remove all that grey paint around the intake and exhaust ports. To find out how much must come off temp fit the intake/exhaust and trace it's casting onto the block.

Good morning guys, I’m glad to be home finally. Spent past week in Baltimore stripping the ship of everything not bolted down, and left it in the yard for a 9 month refurb.

Answers to your questions- sorry bluntness- don’t take offense. I cant do it any other way.

The lift plate had two hooks at one point in its life. The nub of the other is on it.
Civi distributor- PO put 12v. I am leaving 12v too. I can do 24v, but for price and the fact nothing is factory on my Jeep- I don’t feel the need to 24v.

The paint around intake/exhaust- I am going to. Have to dig out the manifolds from my parts stash.

The price- yes it’s eye opening for sure. I paid 2k in cash up front, then 2k cash yesterday. Sometimes paying someone to do something I am capable of is worth it in time. Here is the deal- I have ADHD. I get going on projects and then side track on others. This was one of those projects I want done. If I left it to me to do, it would be next summer. I put new floors in my house 4 years ago- started painting the base shoe molding, but haven’t finished still. I’ll get around to it, or I’ll pay someone to do it.

Oil pan- yes it has a drain plug on bottom. The pan has been welded- skid plate thick. If it wasn’t a army pan, the PO did it.

I have my first full day off today. It’s raining thankfully as it’s washing all the pollen away. I gotta give all three dogs a bath because they decided to roll in the mud at 0700, my house wash folks are coming to scrub the scum off the siding(another thing I could do but don’t want to), and I need to unpack all my Sea bags. It sure is weird belonging to a ship and have no ship. Tomorrow is my birthday- dad is still in town, so we may go do errands.

I am also obsessing over the new Broncos. That is my latest hyper-focus. So time online and YT is on that subject. I can’t help it. I found a few in Raleigh NC I may drive down to test. Three hours each way.

May even pull the tarp off the Jeep! Garage is full of my sea bags and my stateroom couch that I can not push Jeep around to the garage just yet. Need to find friends to come help push it. My dad was huffing and puffing for his life just picking up the patio chair so I will not allow him to do it.

Anyway, the long and short of it.
Will report back more when I get moving on it.

Hey, so my M38 came with the same kind of lift plate. It clearly was broken off. I spoke with a buddy or mine, some years ago, that restored his M38 with the help of his dad who had worked on them while in service - apparently it was common for those to break off due to any number of causes.

I did buy a repro lift plate with both hooks but the holes are drilled slightly further apart than the original and than fit with the bolts. So it's sitting on my parts shelf.....

Otherwise, great work! I run into the same thing with projects - ADD, or whatever, too much time spent on the Army (USAR) and civilian jobs to get to all my own projects.

I believe for the money I'd rather have a vintage 1972.

Did the previous owner leave you with an extra-long dip stick (or custom marks) so you can make sure to keep enough oil in the pan for the oil pick-up float to work properly?
I'd be curious to know how many quarts it holds to the full mark.

I hope your engine builder pulled the cover off the oil pick-up to clean it.

It looks like the timing mark on the crank pulley is just painted on...you might want to hit that spot with a V shaped file so it doesn't disappear by accident.

Will drop the pan. Check the float and also distance for the oil.

I could just buy a pan- and dip stick.
I actually don't know if it has custom marks on it- but I will check.

as for the bronco, I am going to wait- With gas prices the way they are= the folks who bought these bronco's over a year ago will be turning them in shortly for a car like my little focus 3 banger. I am keeping my F150 and the F100 and the M38. Will get rid of the focus.
