Valve seal replacement
I finally got around to replacing the valve seals on my motor today. My Jeep had sat for a long time I have had it for around 6 or 7 years before I got it started and needless to say when I did it really smoked a lot. After checking compression and everything seemed good not perfect but good I suspected valve seals. I used compressed air in the cylinder to hold the valve while I used a spring compressor to remove the retainers and the valve spring. My seals were not in the correct place. The were under retainer instead of between the retainer and the keeper. My question is was this a mistake made by whoever installed them or did they pull through the retainer just because of age and being dry? BTW If anyone is thinking about doing this job it's not that bad of a job. I had to remove the carb, valve cover and I did one sparkplug and wire at a time. Thanks

The intake valve oil stem seals are installed above the top retainer and below the retainer lock clips.
I know the Army TM 9-8015-1 for the m38A1 engine doesn't show this but that is why I refer folks to the Willys/Kaiser civilian F134 overhaul instructions.
If you will visit my main photo album (link is at bottom of each of my posts.) and review the civilian SM-1046 repair manual http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules. ... _album.php

and continue into the F134 chapter http://www.willysmjeeps.com/v2/modules. ... _album.php

you can find your answers there.
