Driver's rank??

Post by Jim »

What were the most common enlisted ranks for a jeep driver
in the Army? I found a replica Korean War era hat and want
to get a rank device for it to go with my Army uniform for parades.
Somehow I don't think a CG Auxiliary Flotilla Commander's
device would be kosher. 8-)

Our M38 is marked for the Fifth Armored Division, 15th Armored
Infantry, A Company, vehicle number 8. My father was stationed
with them at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, during the Korean War,
as Special Staff, Chemical Officer (he ran the gas chamber) and
I'd like to recreate that. He passed away a few years back. You
can see the M38 at http://home.earthlink.net/~starbird1942/
on one of the picture pages.

Jim,

I liked your photos on your website.

I would think that a common rank for a driver would be an E1 through E3 as most non-com's would have other responsibilities.

E4 to E6 would also be drivers' today, depending on their mission or who they were driving. If your vehicle did recon missions I could see up to that rank too. I also know of "O's" that preferred to drive themselves, when they could.
